Substance Misuse in Older People
ORT House Conference Centre, London
8 March 2012

A report from the Royal College of Psychiatrists published in June 2011, Our Invisible Addicts, highlighted the rising problem of substance misuse in the elderly population.

The report recommended several areas to be considered when examining this issue:

- Mortality rates linked to substance misuse are higher in older people compared with younger people
- Higher rates of mental health problems in older people resulting in complex psychiatric morbidity accompanying substance misuse disorders
- Use of over-the-prescription medicines in the elderly population, with the rates of misuse of such medicines being high, especially in older women
- There has been an increase in illicit drug use in the over 40 age group, although use of such drugs are uncommon in the over-65s
- Among other health issues related to substance misuse there are also a number of other psychosocial factors involved that trigger higher rates of alcohol use in older people including bereavement, loneliness, depression and boredom.  Heavy alcohol, drug and tobacco use can also impact on physical health causing cardiovascular, respiratory and digestive complaints.

This conference will aim to highlight the size and shape of the problem, the physical and psychiatric implications; assessment criteria; developing age appropriate services and examine a number of case studies.
