  • The Plan groups action to meet the overall purpose and priorities under the following broad headings:
  • Culture change
  • Prevention and education
  • Providing support and treatment services
  • Protection and controls for individuals and the wider community
  • Delivery

Key action to date

A great deal has been achieved since the Plan was published.  Key action to date includes:

  • Launch of a national communications strategy to target male and female binge drinkers;
  • Additional funding for local Alcohol Action Teams (AATs) and development of three year local alcohol action plans;
  • Appointment of a national alcohol liaison officer to support the work of AATs;
  • Development of a national alcohol information resource to benefit those who plan and provide services;
  • Publication of an alcohol problems support and treatment services framework to help local areas assess needs and plan to meet these needs;
  • Review of gaps in alcohol research and practice;
  • Development of a gender issues network on alcohol;
  • Publication of important additions to the evidence base range of what works in treating people with alcohol problems.

We are about to begin a review of progress in delivering the Plan and determine priorities for future action.
